RACQUETS
The selection of your racquet can be very confusing, but it must be remembered that the majority of power comes from the strings not the frame. So you can change the playing characteristics of your existing racquet by using better strings or different tensions. Also, it is possible to change the characteristics of your racquet by adding lead tape. This provide you with an opportunity to see how different balance affects your style of play.
In determining which racquet is best for you there are several tenets that are applicable irrespective of the manufacturer.
Grip
Correct grip size can be determined by inserting your small finger of your hand between you palm and fingers of the hand holding your racket. If your grip is too smallit is likely to lead to tennis elbow.
Playing styles (weight distribution on your racquet)
If you are a baseline player a head heavy racquet may be preferable.
If your are a serve and volleyer a head light racquet may be preferable.
If your game is all round, an even balanced racquet may be best.
Do I want a long body frame?
A long body will give you more power, especially on the serve, enable reach and spin but at the expense of maneuverability.
Do I want a large head size?
If you seek more power, miss hit balls or desire a larger sweet spot the answer is yes.
Do I want a stiff or flexible frame?
A stiff frame will give more power and control than a flexible frame but transmit greater shock to the arm than a flexible frame which has less power but more comfort.
String patterns
This is often not considered by prospective purchasers of racquets but can affect play remarkably. In summary a string pattern that is open will provide more power and spin than a dense pattern.
